Washington, Dec 27 (UNI) US President Donald Trump will hold a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the duration of the Ukraine peace agreement at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Sunday, the White House announced.
According to the American leader's schedule, Trump will attend a bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy at 3:00 PM (20:00 GMT) on Sunday in Palm Beach, Florida.
Journalists will be allowed to attend the event, according to the schedule.
Trump said in an interview with Politico that he expects the meeting to “go good,” but cautioned that Zelensky “doesn’t have anything until I approve it.” He added that he also expects to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon, as much as I want.”
Zelensky told reporters that the 20-point peace plan hammered out by Ukrainian and US officials is “90% ready” and that he planned to discuss with Trump how Ukraine’s allies could guarantee its security in the future.
The US has allegedly proposed a 15-year agreement that could be renewed, Axios reported on Friday. "I think we need more than 15 years," Zelenskyy told Axios over the phone on Friday, adding that it would be a "big success" if Trump agreed with that during their meeting.
Zelenskyy also said that he was willing to bring the peace plan up for a referendum if Russia agreed to a "minimum" 60-day ceasefire to arrange and hold the vote.
The US president has positively assessed the chances of reaching an agreement with Zelenskyy and told The New York Post in a Friday afternoon phone call that "we have a good shot at it concluding a peace deal."
Trump also said that Zelenskyy "doesn't have anything" regarding peace proposals until he approves it. "He doesn't have anything until I approve it. So we'll see what he's got," Trump told Politico.
Zelenskyy said that he planned to discuss territorial issues, including claims to Donbas, with Trump during their upcoming meeting in Florida.
Europeans expect a positive outcome on Sunday, but acknowledge that any meeting with Trump could end unpredictably. "There is no low-risk scenario with Trump," a NATO official told CNN.
The meeting in Mar-a-Lago comes amid active discussions of a peace plan for Ukraine. Zelenskyy has presented a draft plan that reportedly includes creating a US-proposed special economic zone in Donbas, subject to a referendum, but does not recognize Crimea or Donbas as Russian territories or renounce NATO membership aspirations.
The diplomatic activity follows high-level US-Russia contacts, including talks between Russian and American representatives in Moscow and Miami, where a multi-point settlement plan was discussed. Russian officials said that military developments are influencing the negotiation dynamics.
